Breast Reduction

-What is a breast reduction surgery?

For some individuals, breast size can negatively impact their activities of daily life as well as body confidence. Factors that determine the size of women’s breasts include a genetic predisposition, body weight and hormonal influences. The aim of a breast reduction surgery is to reduce the size and reshape the breasts so that they are more proportioned to the rest of your body and no longer cause functional or aesthetic concern.

This commonly requested procedure is conducted by our board certified plastic surgeons at power of esthetic  in turkey . The procedure helps woman regain confidence, improving lifestyle, appearance and relieving of physical and emotional stress caused by large breasts.

-When to consider the surgery?

If you suffer from back, shoulder or neck pain, bra strap grooving, skin irritation due to large breasts, or breast pain this surgery is an option to alleviate symptoms. The surgery will improve the shape of your breasts.

-What happens at the consultation?

Remember to write down all your possible concerns and questions and have them ready for when you meet with your plastic surgeon. You will be discussing your surgical options, the pros and cons of each, as well as your medical history. The surgeon will need to know all your current medications you are taking and any serious illness you may have had in the past and as to whether you smoke.

You will have a breast examination, including medical photography that will be placed in your confidential medical file (you will sign a consent form for taking, storing and using the photographs). Your height and weight will be measured to ensure you are physically fit for the operation. It is important to note that if you are planning to fall pregnant your surgeon might delay the procedure.

-What happens during a breast reduction surgery?

The plastic surgeon will remove fat, breast tissue and skin in order to achieve a smaller well-defined breast with a youthful shape. The nipples are lifted to a more youthful position and the breasts are reshaped to form smaller breasts.

What you need to consider.

After the surgery your breasts will be better proportioned. The surgery will alleviate neck, back and shoulder pain, in return this will allow for a more physical active lifestyle previously hindered by pain or the size of your beasts. It is important to note that the surgery can cause a decrease in sensation in some areas, including nipples, areolas and within the scars. Some women might face problems with breastfeeding after the surgery.

During your consultation you and your plastic surgeon will discuss these considerations and discuss the best option that suits your requirements and lifestyle. The size and shape of your breasts and how much reduction you desire are factors that will help your plastic surgeon determine the best technique for you.

Bespoke treatment plans.

Your surgeon will discuss your goals, lifestyle, including physical activity, and based on this a bespoke treatment plan will be shared with you.

These will include the surgery approach, the outcome and risks and where the surgery will take place. Expectations will be discussed, and a post-surgery recovery plan will be shared.

All you need to know about the procedure.

All you need to know about the procedure.

The procedure is a day case operation and commonly involves anchor shaped scars where the surgeon will remove the excess fat, breast tissue and skin. The nipple and areola are lifted up to their new higher position. If the areolas were enlarged or stretched they will be reduced and excess skin that was located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Liposuction may be used to improve the contour under the arm.

-Scars and incisions what will they look like?

Scars vary according to type of incision you and your plastic surgeon agree on, our plastic surgeons at power of esthetic will conceal some incision lines in your natural breast contours as much a possible.  As most scars, if looked after well post-surgery, they mature over 18 months, your surgeon will make every effort to hide and minimize scars, the goal of the surgery is to achieve the best result with the least visible scar.

-Recovery and how long will my results last?

Your recovery time, post-operative instructions and how long before you can resume your normal physical activity and work will be individualized depending on your procedure and discussed prior to your surgery.  You will receive a medical support bra that will be required to be worn.

It is important to note that your surgeon will share detailed instructions of how to take care of your surgical area and any warning symptoms to look out for. The amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among patients and this will be discussed based on your particular case.

Breast reduction surgery is long lasting, unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your breasts will remain a consistent size. Aging and gravity can still affect your breast over time. Routine follow-ups after surgery  should not be missed.

-What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery offers many advantages for women who have breasts that are too large for their body frames. Breast reduction is capable of:

Decreasing the size of the breasts for results that are more balanced and proportionate to the body

Relieving physical discomfort due to overly large breasts

Reducing pain in areas such as the neck, back, and shoulders

Diminishing skin rashes under the breasts

Reducing breast ptosis (sagging)

Minimizing the likelihood of bra-strap indentations

Improving the chances of comfortably fitting into desired clothing

Reducing self-consciousness about the appearance of the breasts

This procedure has helped many women address a very common concern and achieve improved breast shape and symmetry. Breast reduction can also yield certain benefits of a breast lift for many patients, diminishing signs of sagginess and giving the breasts a firmer, more youthful appearance.

-Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Women who suffer with back, neck, and/or shoulder pain as a result of large pendulous breasts are often excellent candidates for breast reduction surgery, as well as those who simply want an effective solution for breasts that are excessively large for their bodies. Individuals who are in relatively good overall health and have reasonable expectations for the outcome of breast reduction surgery are typically good candidates for the procedure. Patients should also be at their ideal weight (or close to their ideal weight) at the time of surgery since weight loss after the treatment can negatively affect the aesthetic results.

It is important to note that smoking can result in significant complications, including loss of the nipple-areola complex as well as wound-healing problems due to the decrease in circulation to the skin. Therefore, we ask all patients undergoing breast reduction surgery to quit smoking for one month prior to surgery and at least one month after surgery.

Breast Reduction and Breastfeeding

While there is a substantial number of women who are not naturally able to breastfeed regardless of whether they have breast surgery, individuals who have that ability before a breast reduction procedure should have it afterward, as well. However, this will ultimately depend on the particular breast reduction technique that is utilized. For those who would like to retain their ability to breastfeed, the surgical technique should be one that does not modify the milk ducts or other anatomical areas that may affect future breastfeeding. It is important to discuss your wishes in this regard with our plastic surgeon during the initial consultation. He will talk with you about your options and create a treatment plan with your goals in mind.

-What Can I Expect During Breast Reduction Recovery?

Patients should wear a supportive bra for three to four weeks after the operation. Under most circumstances, no drains are used after surgery and all the sutures are dissolvable. Many patients are able to resume normal daily routines approximately two weeks following surgery; however, this will depend on each patient’s unique needs during the recovery process. Lifting of heavy objects and strenuous exercise/activities should be avoided for several weeks after surgery, or until our surgeon recommends otherwise.

-Will I Have Breast Reduction Scars?

The location and extent of scarring will ultimately depend on the specific breast reduction technique that is used in the procedure. As the incision begins to heal (i.e. after three weeks), there are a number of things you can do to help minimize the size and appearance of the scar. Massaging the scar with firm finger pressure can help it blend in and decrease the swelling. In addition, paper tape and silicone gel sheeting have both been shown to help minimize the scars with time. Some commercially available products such as Mederma® or vitamin E may also have some benefit. While it is not possible to have surgical breast reduction without scars resulting from the procedure, our plastic surgeons strive to place incisions in areas that allow residual scarring to be easily concealed under clothing (even bathing suits).

-Is a Breast Reduction without Surgery Possible?

For some individuals, reducing the size of their breasts to some degree may be possible through diet and exercise alone. This can typically only be effective for those who have overly large breasts due to excess fat as opposed to glandular tissue. If the breasts are enlarged due to excess glandular tissue, diet and breast reduction exercises will likely not have an effect, and surgery may be the only option to significantly reduce breast size.
